Natural Bodybuilder Bert Harrop
How did you get started in bodybuilding?
Back in 1983 while in high school I started to hit the weights with a couple of my friends in a makeshift garage gym. I remember the rush that the weights gave me and I never put them down. My brother-in-law was a state title bodybuilder many years ago and when I saw his competition photos I knew that one day I was going to walk that path.
What is your Training Philosophy:
I am currently using a 7 day high intensity rotation hitting each of my bodyparts once per week. I always incorporate some form of giant sets, supersets, drop sets, strip sets, and/or pre exhaustion sets using large compound movements (Squats, Dips, Pull-ups, Rows). I use these tools with every workout varying just the total volume. Some days lower reps 6-8 and other up to 12-15 depending how I feel. Every workout is at 100% intensity. I do not believe that the average person can over-train if their diet, supplementation, training, and rest is adequate.

What is your diet like?
I had always followed a low fat, moderate protein, and high carb diet. That changed quite a bit in the last 3 years when I started competing. I upped my protein to ~ 300 grams and only take in between 250 – 300 grams of low glycemic carbs (rye flakes, oats, sweet potato, and pearled barley) and increased my fats to ~20% (olive oil, walnuts, fish, flax, and peanut butter). The only simple sugar I consume is post workout when I take 50 grams of dextrose or waxy maize.
Who are your Role Models?
Don’t really have a role model but I admire and respect the training philosophy of the WNBF’s Kurt Weidner. He was instrumental in turning me pro.
What advice would you give to new athletes?
Bodybuilding is a lifestyle not a short term commitment and anything less than that will result in compromised results.
“Enjoy the training for it is the ultimate pinnacle of this journey.”
