As smart as I think I am, my wife tends to be more well grounded then myself. If my having to make do with 12 Nautilus machines, a Smith/Cable machine and 1100 lbs of freewights makes her happy then I will simply have to suffer.
Seriously though, Eva has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams no matter what they were/are or will be.

Here is a shot of my 11 year olds abs and future training partner.

He is focused and works out 3x's a week doing pull-ups
chins, weighted push ups, and we just started with some deads
and squats.
Wow, fantastic abs...oh for the days when I had that kind of metabolism!

Thanks for the article. I do agree that free weights are a valuable tool; however, I don't subscribe to the free-weights/machines debate. I value the use of both and a firmly believe there is a benefit of having both available. I have found that more often then not most clients have very poor muscle/mind coordination during their first month or two of training. I tend to focus more on machine work for these individuals and slow introduce them to free-weights. I also value taking them away from free-weights after a few more months and work with more isolation movements on machines. My son and his friends make for an interesting study. I can give my son William any exercise to perform and he is right on the money with control and execution. He just needs a couple of minor pointers. Most of his friends on the other hand are outright dangerous with free-weights. No matter how I breakdown or demonstrate a movement, there is some fundamental mind-body coordination missing. They have simply never been exposed to exercise and require a more patient approach to bring them along.

Just a my thoughts.
Hey James,

First thank you for the phone call...I'm not sure what timezone you are in, I'm assuming you are an hour or so in front of me. The day you called was my most sickest (illest?) day; I'm not sure I even remembered I owned a phone much less that I got a phone call, haha! I enjoy our talks and look forward to catching you on the phone.

Based on what you said above, I'm guessing that we are in agreement then as I believe in using both as well and am really trying to address those who eschew free weights in a "machine-only" training.

I guess if we have a point where we can agree to disagree it is that of the new trainer. I wish someone had worked with me on the big 3 as my foundation as it would have benefited my training immensely. But I do agree with you on the point that I probably run more trainees off by starting them on a free-weight basics course to start with. I think most are looking for something a bit more comfortable when starting off so I might be a bit too militant with my personal training, haha!

We do have a new convert who has started training with us who is doing very well with free weights but he is certainly the exception to the rule. He came to us with a myriad of health problems including diabetes & high blood pressure and it's been great working with him to improve his health.

Thank you as always for your opinions & talks...I enjoy them whether we agree or not!

I've noticed the same thing with people I've tried to train/workout with. I do the exercise in front of them slowly, expaining each step and when they try to do it they're like a newborn fawn trying to take it's first steps moments after birth. I know it was a long tome ago, but I don't remember ever being like that. I guess it really does varie person to person.

And another argument for free weights: I've done leg presses one week and squats the next, same rep scheme and intensity (obviously different weights) and the day after leg presses maybe some light soreness, day after squats...HOLY CRAP!!! And, I go deeper on my leg presses. Now I only do leg presses if I'm feeling really beat that day.

I agree; you just can't duplicate what squats & deadlifts do to the body positively.

Ok, so the guy in the video that was trowing stuff around and trowing DB's at the mirror, what was the problem? He was grunting too loudly and they said something about it, was that it? I didn't really hear him grunting in the video, I just saw the girl come up and start talking to him, and then he went all kinds of crazy.
