My name is
Scott "Old Navy" Hults. I am a retired
U.S. Navy Captain. I got the nickname, "Old Navy" from my fellow gym
rats while I was preparing to enter my first bodybuilding contest in
2004 at the age of 61. My training was intense. The guys would say
things like, "Hey, Old Navy, slow down man, take it easy, you aren't
that young anymore." What they didn’t
understand was, to me, age is a statistic not a burden. Nevertheless,
I liked the nickname so I kept it.
In March of 2005, after training for 10 months, I entered my first
competition, a non-tested NPC event. In the following 21
months I entered 16 more tested and non-tested contests, winning 35
weight, height, age class and Best Poser (3) trophies,
including the 2006 FAME WNSO Men's
Masters 60+ World Championship in Toronto, and at 63 years of age, my
Masters Pro Card at the 2006 NGA National Bodybuilding &
Figure World Championships in Georgia and a second Masters Pro Card at
the 2006 IDFA Canadian Classic II in Toronto.
Along the way, www.Bodybuilding.com named me “Amateur
Bodybuilder of the Week” in 2005, “Over 40 Amateur Bodybuilder
of the Week” in 2006 and "Over 40 Amateur Bodybuilder of the
Year 2006."
I
placed Third in my first Pro show on May 12th, the
2007 NGA Olympic Gold Junior Pro Championship in
Salt Lake City, Utah. I was also the Guest Poser for the
amateur show proceeding the Pro competition.
On
June 9th, I was Guest Poser at the 2007 FAME
WNSO National Championship in Toronto, Canada. At the
show, based upon being the 2006 FAME WNSO Men's
Masters World Champion, I was awarded the first FAME
WNSO Master Pro card as the Federation announced the new
Master Pro Division.
I
will enter my first Natural Professional Masters competition,
the 2007 NGA Pro/Am in Duluth, Georgia on
September 8th. This is the show where I won my first Masters Pro
Card. I will then continue training to enter the 2007 FAME
WNSO Master Pro Championship in Miami on
November 2nd – 4th.
I stepped onto the stage in Toronto at the 2006
IDFA Canadian Classic II weighing 141 pounds. I
entered this contest about three pounds fuller than any other
contest I entered in 2006. I am 5' 7" tall. My goal for my first
Pro Show was to compete somewhere between 150 and 155 pounds. I
competed at 150.0
In
addition to being a professional body builder, I am a National
Federation of Personal Trainers (NFPT) Certified
Personal Trainer (CPT) and I am a contest judge
for the SNBF, the OCB and the
WNSO.
I
have been married for nearly 30 years and have two daughters who
are attending college.
My
training for competitions is focused and intense. I work out 90
minutes-a-day, five days-a-week. I do a lot of strength
training and cardio. I do a lot of heavy
lifting and RM work (taking my sets to
failure). I include cardio with most workouts
and do cardio on non-weight training days.
My
diet consists of five to six meals per day, with a good balance
of protein, carbs and fat. I drink about a
gallon of water a day and take some supplements, including
creatine, amino acids, glutamine, multi-vitamins
and protein powder.
Finally, it’s important
to note why I am a competitive professional bodybuilder.
Mainly, it is for three reasons, and none of the three reasons
are due to ego.
First, I have some health issues that I have been able to keep
under control, without medication, by living a healthy life
style that includes aggressive workouts and a solid diet.
Second, I work with senior adults, who, like me, have health
issues. I use my success on stage as an example
of what someone can achieve, even with health issues of their
own.
Third, I work with young athletes, who sometimes are in a hurry
to grow muscles the “easy” way. As a natural athlete, I
dissuade them and encourage them to grow muscles the good old
fashioned way, with just plain old hard work.
